Director of Preclinical Research

📍Hybrid (Boston) | Reports to CEO

Skeletalis is a Boston-based biotechnology company developing next-generation therapeutics to rebuild and protect the skeletal system. Our platform technology leverages bone-targeted small molecules for treatment of osteoporosis and other musculoskeletal diseases. Skeletalis is backed by Pillar, KdT, and age1 ventures.

We’re seeking an experienced and strategic Director of Preclinical Research to guide Skeletalis’ translational programs from discovery through IND-enabling studies. The ideal candidate combines scientific depth with operational rigor to lead preclinical development strategy, manage CROs, and translate data into actionable insights that move programs efficiently toward the clinic.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the execution and program management of preclinical development activities for SKE001 and follow-on assets, ensuring milestones, quality, budget and timelines are met.
  • Design and oversee in vitro and in vivo pharmacology studies, including assay development, disease models, and biomarker integration.
  • Manage CROs, CDMOs, consultants, and academic collaborators to ensure operational excellence.
  • Develop and maintain scientific work plans, study synopses, and integrated development timelines from discovery through IND-enabling studies.
  • Build and coordinate the cross-functional infrastructure that connects chemistry, biology, formulation, ADME/DMPK, and toxicology efforts.

What You Bring

  • PhD (or equivalent) in Cellular/Molecular Biology, Pharmacology, or related discipline with deep expertise in preclinical translational research.
  • ~10 years of industry experience advancing therapeutics from discovery to IND-enabling stages.
  • Strong record of CRO/CDMO management, budget oversight, and program leadership in small-company or fast-moving environments. Proven ability to design and execute molecular, cellular, and in vivo studies linking target biology to disease mechanisms.
  • Excellent communicator capable of synthesizing data across functions and presenting to executives, partners, and investors.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with bone biology, musculoskeletal disease models, or skeletal drug development.
  • Familiarity with CMC coordination, formulation development, or early toxicology planning.
  • Demonstrated success supporting regulatory submissions or IND-enabling documentation.

Why Join Us

  • Help shape the scientific and strategic foundation of a high-impact biotech translating breakthrough science into first-in-class therapies.
  • Work directly with the executive team in a collaborative, mission-driven culture.
  • Opportunity for growth as Skeletalis expands its preclinical and clinical pipeline.
